Fedun all impress as Oilers split squads produce mixed bag
Split squads, split decision as two teams wearing Edmonton Oilers sweaters battled a like number of Calgary Flames clubs to a doubleheader split to open the NHL exhibition season on Saturday night. The Oilers prevailed 3 2 in Calgary and the Flames reciprocated in Edmonton, 6 5 in the shootout.
Dallas Eakins didn coach in either game, but I guessing he didn much like what he saw in the third periods of those games, with Oilers gassing a multi goal lead in both cases. In Calgary they recovered to steal the win on Martin Marincin late goal and some sketchy but ultimately effective defending in the dying seconds. In Edmonton,

juicy couture, blowing a 5 2 lead in the last nine minutes, then getting thumped in the shootout in the minimum four attempts.
While Eakins wants to win games right out of the gate, ultimately the final score means very little at this time of year. What matters more is individual performance as players make their case for a spot on the team. Here are a few glimpses of guys who caught my eye over the course of an evening spent watching a couple of periods of each encounter on the web.
1 Jason LaBarbera Looked rock solid, stopping all 12 shots he faced. He is a big man who relies on positioning rather than acrobatics.
2 Jeff Petry Impressed for the second time in two days with the overall quality of his game.
14 Jordan Eberle Missed the net on his best chance, but managed a team high 4 shots and helped set up the game winner.
27 Boyd Gordon For a guy who is reputed to have little offence, he looked pretty darn good in the offensive zone. Nothing fancy, but took the play and/or his body to the net front. 2 shots,
montblanc, 1 assist. 65% on the faceoff dot, and solid on the penalty kill.
28 Ryan Jones Strong effort, rewarded with a goal on a deflection. Took a couple of iffy penalties, but drew one himself to partially make amends. Skated hard on both the fore and back check, and showed some decent chemistry with Gordon and Perron.
30 Richard Bachman I missed most of his part of the game,
coach outlet store, and the highlights are always unfair to the goalies as they are heavily biased towards showing the shots that beat them. That said, he could have made the second goal go away with a proactive move to field the shoot in before it got into the trapezoid.
36 Philip Larsen Showed a real good stick in the defensive zone. Also brought a little physicality, credited with 4 hits (most on either Oiler team).
41 Will Acton Passable performance in his first NHL game of any description. Looked good rushing the puck a time or two, managed 3 shots. 56% on the dot. It will be interesting to see how he matches up against something closer to full NHL competition.
47 Ty Bilcke Had a nightmare shift in which he got walked by Mark Giordano, was on the receiving end of a heavy hit, and coughed up the puck twice. Nearly scored in the second period but was robbed by Joey MacDonald. Still, he was one of a number of players near the bottom end of the two squads who appeared out of his depth.
48 Ryan Hamilton Helped out on the game winner,
asics running, otherwise played a fairly undistinguished game. Did provide some traffic in front of Flames net. Skating may be an issue.
57 David Perron Scored his first goal as an Oiler on a shot that eluded Joni Ortio on the short side. Good quick release, but I not sure how often that shot beats an NHL netminder. His line had some good puck movement at times. Looked decent on the PK.
67 Travis Ewanyk Struggled in his first NHL game. His line (with Bilcke and Derek Nesbitt) struggled in their own zone. Got decisively beaten by Blair Jones in the night only fight,

80 Martin Marincin Not his best game, all he did was score the winning goal.
81 Taylor Fedun Contributed assists on the first two Oilers goals and impressed with his puck movement in other areas of the ice. Made one pass to nobody and was guilty of icing the puck a couple of times, but generally played a safe, contained game.
96 Gregory Chase Can say as I noticed him a whole lot, but he produced a truly ugly stat line zeroes across the board other than three (3) giveaways.
4 Taylor Hall A weird,
ralph lauren, high event night for the erstwhile winger. Was credited with a first minute goal on a shot that replays conclusively showed never crossed the goal line. Made some nice defensive plays and generally held his own in his own end. Fell asleep when the Oilers pulled ahead, though, and had a couple of bad giveaways and three (3) minor penalties, at least two of which were avoidable. His night ended as it began when his shootout attempt was stopped right on the goal line, except this time the ref got the call right.
6 Jesse Joensuu Impressive Edmonton debut for the massive Finn, scoring a goal and an assist while leading all Oilers with 5 shots on goal. Flames couldn really handle him around their own goal. He no dipsy doodler but has decent skill for such a huge man.
19 Justin Schultz Played 27:06 to lead all Oilers. Made a terrific pass to Smyth in the late going that very nearly decided things in Oilers favour.
21 Andrew Ference Edmonton native looked pretty solid in his first home game. Excellent choice to ride shotgun for young Nurse. Did take a third period penalty that led to the tying goal,

23 Linus Omark Struggled in his own zone,
ghd hair, and was burned on both the second and fourth Flames goals when on both occasions he tried but failed to take away either the pass to, or the shot from, his man on the point. Had one impressive sequence of puck control where he deliberately stepped on the puck and dragged it along the end wall for ten or more seconds. Made a nice move on the shootout but couldn quite lift the puck over Reto Berra, who impressed in the Flames net.
37 Denis Grebeshkov Got a well earned assist on Smyth powerplay marker with a sharp pass, but had his issues in the defensive zone, especially on the game tying goal when Sven Baertschi made him look foolish.
38 Olivier Roy Forgettable night for the youngster, who allowed four goals on 22 shots and was rescued by the goal post on two other occasions. Gave up three goals in four minutes in Calgary third period comeback, then was lit up in the shootout for a pair of ridiculously easy snipes by Flames wannabes Baertschi and Roman Horak. Some of it was circumstances, but some of it was the need of making a save. Has demonstrated a tendency to give up goals in bunches in the past, and did again tonight.
40 Devan Dubnyk Gave up a goal on his first shot,
true religion jeans, something all four goaltenders did in the Edmonton game, a rather unusual state of affairs. Looked solid thereafter, stopping his last 12 shots and leaving at the midway point with a 4 1 lead.
62 Mark Arcobello Started and finished a scoring play in the second when his neutral zone steal sparked a quick counter attack by his wingers Yakupov and Joensuu, with Arco himself swooping in to put the finishing touch on a four shot barrage.
64 Nail Yakupov Had my favourite quote of the night when he said matter if it pre season or regular season, we shouldn have lost that game. Was decidedly unhappy with the outcome and his own performance, which was actually not that bad.
71 Kyle Platzer Carried over his scoring touch from the rookie tournament by potting a garbage goal off an ugly scramble late in the first. Three goals in four games may do wonders for his confidence even after his inevitable return to London.
