The local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts councils are feeling the sting of the fragile economy as scouts families cut back on spending and annual fundraising efforts have fallen short of their goals.This year the Prairielands Council, which serves nearly 5,000 young people in Vermilion, Champaign, Douglas, Edgar, Ford, Iroquois and Piatt counties and Fountain and Vermillion counties in Indiana, set a goal of $225,000 for its annual Friends of Scouting campaign. So far, though, they have raised only $169,197 of that goal.Council leaders say that although this is putting a serious strain on the council ability to meet its financial obligations, they vow not to close Camp Robert Drake between Oakwood and Catlin.Council Friends of Scouting Campaign Chair Aron McDonald said, goal this year was very reasonable, just slightly more than what we were able to raise last year.what we are seeing is that people who have traditionally made a contribution to the campaign are still doing so, but they are giving less than in previous years, McDonald said, adding that this trend shows that people believe Scouting is having an impact in the community, but they personally have had to make some hard decisions based on the economy.have especially seen this in the family division of our campaign, he said.
