Catcher's Mitt Seat Is Rear Guard In Crash
December 28, 1995By Jim Mateja, Chicago Tribune
CHICAGO Automakers use air bag systems in their vehicles to protect occupants in a frontal collision. A few even have air bag systems to protect occupants in side impacts.
But what are occupants to do when struck from the rear, which occurs in about 10 percent of all collisions?
What protection can an automaker offer in that type of crash, when an air bag generally won't deploy?
Simple,
michael kors pas cher. Use a catcher's mitt,
wholesale true religion.
General Motors Delphi Automotive Systems,
nike factory, GM's parts and components operation, has come up with a car seat designed to aid occupants in rear end collisions. The seat is designed to snuggle up around them in a rear impact and keep them in place until the force dissipates.
''The catcher's mitt is to a rear impact like the air bag is to a frontal impact,'' said Richard Neely, engineering manager of safety seat development for Delphi.
A catcher's mitt seat is designed to yield to the occupant's body upon impact. Today's car seats cushion you from irregularities and bumps or holes in the road surface. But if you are struck from the rear, the seat offers little protection. You bounce back into the seat and are propelled forward. If you are not wearing a seat belt,
juicy couture, you run the risk of striking the steering column or instrument panel, which often house air bags. But those bags deploy only in a frontal impact. Battenberg III, president of Delphi. ''After a few seconds, the seat releases you slowly and gradually. The catcher's mitt can be used in front or rear seats, in cars, trucks or vans. Our customers, component suppliers to the automakers (parts suppliers such as Borg Warner and Bosch), are demanding that it be used in front seats first.''
The catcher's mitt seat is activated when the force of the body thrown back into the seat strikes a lower back frame cross member,
salvatore ferragamo. The cross member gives and forces the sides of the seat to wrap around and hold the occupant,
nike running.
''The occupant is pocketed into the seat,

The seat is designed to work regardless of a person's size or weight, but it won't substitute for a child safety seat,
lancel, Neely said.
In combination with the catcher's mitt, Delphi has developed an automatic head restraint. When the cross member activates the seat,
ray ban, it also forces the head restraint to move upward and forward toward the occupant's head.
''Closing the gap between the head and the restraint slows down the head before impact with the restraint to reduce injury,
louis vuitton, especially what we call whiplash,'' Neely said.
Neely added that women are more susceptible to neck injury and whiplash in rear impacts because they have less neck muscle and because they usually are shorter than men and sit farther from the head restraint.
The optimum protection would be offered by a helmet, though ''you'd never get anyone to wear one,'' Neely said.
An automaker will offer the catcher's mitt seat in one of its cars in 1996, (it's likely to be available in a European luxury car and not a GM product),
montblanc, but Delphi officials wouldn't name the manufacturer.
Side air bags 1st priority
Delphi representatives say development is proceeding faster and demand is greater for side impact air bags. One reason is economics. ''You can install side impact air bags relatively inexpensively vs. a catcher's mitt,
chi flat iron,'' Battenberg said.
Ford recently announced that within two years,
converse sneakers, it expects to offer air bags mounted in the sides of the front seats in all of its cars and trucks. Although some of today's side bags, notably Volvo's, inflate to protect the chest in a side impact,
moncler, Ford said its bag will protect chest and head. GM officials said the side bags they are developing can protect chest or head or both and can be housed in the door or the seat.
One of the problems with side impact bags is that they are so new and so few, there hasn't been enough real world experience to determine what location and type of side bag is best. Many experts think the seat mounted bag affords more protection because the bag stays with the seat whenever it's moved forward or backward based on driver or passenger height.
