This is the longest loop trail in the state of Arkansas. The Eagle Rock Loop Trail is very popular with out of state hikers as well as native Arkansans. The loop is a combination of parts of the Little Missouri, Viles Branch Equestrian, and Athens Big Fork Trails. The southern section of the Little Missouri Trail is known as Winding Stairs. Because Winding Stairs is so distinctive, we describe it as a trail unto itself. The Eagle Rock Loop includes all but 0.7 mile of the south end of Winding Stairs and also encompasses 3.5 miles of the Viles Branch Equestrian Trail and most of the Athens Big Fork Trail except the northern mile and the southern mile. The Eagle Rock Loop Trail, which crosses the Little Missouri River nine times and goes over nine mountains, allows you to go out and have a backpacking experience and never have to go over the same ground twice. You can leave a vehicle at one access point and hike back to it.

View Topo MapThis trail was close to the college my daughter is attending so we decided to backpack prior to heading home. Very enjoyable hike. 3 days and two nights to complete going clockwise starting at the Albert Pike rec area. Second day was the hardest through the mountains. The 3rd day was pretty much all down hill. Water accessable throughout the whole trip. All the creeks were flowing pretty good,
insanity workout calendar, especially after intense storms we encountered on the second night. Be sure to take a cheap pair of water shoes, you will need these for for the numerous water crossings. Mosquitos were not a problem. However, plenty of ticks. Scenery was great, plenty of places to swim and enjoy the water. Only passed 9 hikers in 3 days, and not one single person was at the little Missouri river falls area! Might make this a yearly event until she finishes college.
Overall this is a very good trail. The climbs are pretty steep but very short in duration. There had been a lot of rain in the area the previous couple of weeks, so the Little Missouri as well as the creeks were running very high. It got old taking off the boots for just about every water crossing,
ralph lauren, but very few creeks were crossable with your boots on if you wanted to keep them dry. We did not see very many other hikers and never had trouble finding a good camping location. Also as a plus, we did not encounter any ticks or mosquitoes. Overall it was a fun trip and we did it in 3 days which gave us plenty of time to enjoy the trail and each campsite.
A great hike, but probably not for real beginners or those with arachnophobia. We did it in 2.5 days, going at a pretty quick pace. But to really enjoy it,
louis vuitton, go ahead and plan an extra day and take the time to take a dip,
nike factory outlet, enjoy the scenery, and hang out at the falls for a while. A couple of the climbs can really wear you out if you're not used to it. There are plenty of camp sites along the way, and the locals we came across were super friendly. The only disappointment was that we didn't see many critters, outside of millions of spiders and one very scared squirrel.
Started about 5:30pm in mid May. Forest was very lush and everything was very green and wet. Wear DEET!! There are lots of mosquitoes and tics everywhere and you will get eaten up if you don't protect with bug repellent. The weather was perfect, around 75 deg F with night temperatures around 55. There are a lot of raccoons that are pretty aggressive at most of the campsites, so be sure to bag your smellables and rope them up in a tree off the ground. Be sure to take a swim in some of the many pools along the trail. The water is very clean and refreshing after a long couple of miles. There are many river crossings that you will probably have to take your boots off for. We hiked at a pretty fast pace and it took us two full days. I would recommend three.
This trail was very good. It has taken me quite a while to write about it,
marc jacobs, but it was very fun. Views and scenery were awesome. Only drawback was that we went went the water in the creeks and rivers were probably at their highest or very close, which made a few creek crossings in the winding stairs and by little missouri falls a bit scary. Overall we had great weather. I would suggest like someone said to do this in fall and early winter months,
nike mercurial, weather should be nice and water not too too high. There were a ton of set camping spots which made it real nice. Best advice,
louis vuitton, if you are from anywhere south of arkansas or don't live in a hilly area like me, don't underestimate the athens trail. that was a long day.
My brother and I hit the trail beginning at the Winding Stairs on 1 1 08. Excellent hike! There are muliple water crossings the first day, most of which are small easy to cross creeks. There are three major river crossings that require boots off as the water is knee deep. My brother decided to attempt a crossing without changing and quickly regretted that decision.
We trekked on until we were about a quarter mile from the Turn North Jct. There are good sites along this area for camping. That night it got down to about 21 degrees. The next day was all up and down. Very few switchbacks. There is a nice campsite at the peak of the climb. After that its all down. Its high impact on the knees. As you continue down,
air max 95, you will eventually come to a single lane dirt road. If you cross the road you can continue on the second half of this trek which will lopp you back to the Winding Stairs. You can also take a right on this road and follow it about 4 miles back to the Winding Stairs parking area and you can cut the upper part off. (Makes it a two day trip)
One strong suggestion would be to do this trek counter clockwise!!! I can not stress this enough. The second day may be up, up, and more up. However, you will realize the folly of a clockwise trek when you start to head down the other side.
The trek has many areas for photo ops. Primative campsites are easy to find and the running water of the creeks will give you plenty of water. Do yourself a favor and plan a trip to this site.
Suggestion: Check out this website at Trimble Outdoors. Only the Athens Fork trail is a challenge (ridge after ridge after ridge); Whoever made this trail didn't believe in switchbacks. Overall beautiful country; me and my 12 year old son had a good time. Be careful to follow the white blazes. Several times we came to trail intersections where it was not clear which way to go. We hike this trail clockwise; on the section from Eagle Rock Vista to the fireroad parking lot there is a deceptive turn. The trail is following an old road when it turns down what looks like a water run off spot; I continued down the road quite a ways before I realized that there weren't any white blazes on the trees. I followed the "road" that was no longer the trail to the fire road and took a left to get back to the Athens Fork Trail at the Blaylock Parking area. All in all this hike has a lot of positives: nice streams, history,
louboutin shoes, and good views. I highly recommend it.
We drove about 7 hours from Austin to hike this trail and it was worth it. The forest trails, swimming holes, and occasional views across rolling green mountains made for a nice change of scenery. It took us a fairly leisurely 3 1/2 days to hike the trail,
air jordan, is done by some in 2. We were alone on the trail for most of our hike.
The only difficult parts of the trail were the fairly steep climbs throughout the Athens Big Fork Trail area and the many river crossings some up to waist deep. Traveling the trail clockwise did seem like the best way to go. Some of the climbs in the Athens Big Fork Trail area seemed more treacherous in reverse.
We started the trail at the Albert's Pike Campground. We had some trouble finding the parking lot and trail head which is located up a dirt road from the camping area. The parking area is obvious and well marked, keep going until you find it.
I not sure this was necessarily the best place to start. It would have been nice to camp towards the end of the Winding Stairs area and I would also avoid camping on the Equestrian Trail. This area was swampy and particularly tick ridden,
oakley.
You can get a more detailed map at the ranger station Glenwood which was helpful. Be particularly careful to make sure you are still on the trail after river crossings. Aside from that the trail was well marked and easy to follow,
michael kors outlet.
The two downsides of the hike were bugs and the heat. Chiggers were the worst problem. There were many areas where grass and brush had grown over the trail wear long pants in these areas or you will regret it! Ticks were also particularly bad. Bring lots of deet. Also, Arkansas is very humid and hot. This hike would probably be nicest in the spring or fall when the temperatures are a little cooler.
If you got time, spend a day or two in Hot Springs after your hike. The town has an interesting history and the people there are very friendly. The water cascades over rocks near the Winding Stairs and you can view the power of water to erode rock. There are many stream/river crossings so don't bother trying to keep your boots dry. The mountains on the Athens Big Fork trail aren't very tall, although the trail can be steep with very few switchbacks. Parts of the trail are littered (old beer cans, soda cans,
raybans.com, etc.) and the area near the Albert Pike rec area is crowded. When backpacking, you realize how close you are to civilization if you sleep near the rec center.
