Environmentalists and business owners packed the Annapolis city council chambers last night to tell their sides on a proposed citywide ban on plastic bags at a public hearing,lululemon outlet, with grocery chains also weighing in on an issue that would change the way they do business.

The aim of the bill is to protect the environment, particularly the Chesapeake Bay, and to curb consumption, said Shropshire,michealkors, a Ward 7 Democrat.
But many business owners said switching to paper bags would be a burden because the cost of paper bags is as much as four times that of the plastic equivalent.

Jeff Zellmer of the Maryland Retailers Association said banning plastic bags would increase the cost of a store's operation drastically.
"Business is not against this," Shropshire said. "Many of the businesses on Main Street already use paper bags. Ultimately, being green is profitable and it's the right thing to do.".
