A big heap of garbage from
Barrhaven resident Rosemary Taylor would just like to get her garbage picked up. The problem is, she isn't generating enough to satisfy the city.
The good people at city hall have been telling us for years that we need to reduce, reuse and recycle. The less garbage we produce, the better. Taylor has taken this very much to heart. She is a keen user of the blue and black boxes and recycles her plastic bags at the grocery store. As a result, she has been able to reduce her garbage to a single plastic grocery bag per week. In the winter, polo ralph lauren, she stores those in her garage until there is enough to fill a larger green plastic bag. In the summer, that's not quite so attractive.
When she complained, the city's response was to send an employee to her door with an "advisory notice," telling her she was failing to meet the minimum standards under Bylaw 2006 300.
The city employee advised her that garbage inside "kitchen catchers" was not acceptable. The city specifies a minimum size for a garbage container. Garbage must be contained in a garbage bag 83 centimetres by 66 centimetres, or in a can no less than 46 centimetres at the bottom and no more than 90 centimetres high.
The city employee also told Taylor that her little garbage bag was too small to justify an additional stop for the truck. She lives in a row house, and it is four or five steps from the neighbour's house to hers.
Not satisfied by this "arrogant" response, tory burch sale, Taylor e mailed her city councillor, coach outlet online, Jan Harder, and explained the problem. Harder's staff sent an e mail to city staff and assumed the matter would be taken care of.
When she saw no action, christian louboutin shoes, Taylor sent her e mail on to most members of city council. Only two replied. Councillor Gord Hunter said he had faced the same problem when he was a single person generating less garbage. "I walked to my neighbour's pile and placed my little bag there. End of problem," Hunter said.
Councillor Marianne Wilkinson saluted Taylor for her fine job of recycling, then went on to describe her own composting efforts.
In an interview, city solid waste director Albert Shamess explained that the little white garbage bags constitute a health and safety problem. Given the number of stops a garbageman makes in a day, bending over to pick up the little bags could be hard on the back, true religion outlet, Shamess says. They are also more difficult to see than a big green bag or a large garbage can, he says.
The garbageman could pick up Taylor's small amount of garbage, but if that were done for one person, prada outlet, they'd have to do it for everyone, Shamess says. Sometimes garbagemen do pick up things that aren't on the city's specified list or in the appropriate containers, Shamess says, but they shouldn't.
"It's better to have a standardized process, polo outlet," he says. They could frame that quote and put it up on the wall in every city office.
In effect, mcm handbags, the city is saying that people have to buy big green garbage bags to put their single white bag in. Why put just one bag plastic bag into the dump when you can throw away two? As an environmental policy, chi hair straighteners, it's a little lacking. And is it really easier to stoop to pick up a green bag than a white one?
Like everyone else, Shamess gives Taylor credit for doing so much good work on recycling.
On balance, Taylor would like to see a little less saluting and a little more garbage pickup. Maybe the city would like to reduce her taxes to make up for the weeks when her garbage isn't picked up, she says.
People at city hall don't seem to understand, but this is a customer service issue. You can't spend so much time and money lecturing people on reducing garbage, then fail to pick up the garbage of your truest believers. Quite a number of city councillors had a chance to put this problem right. They didn't. Albert Shamess had an opportunity after I interviewed him last week. Taylor has heard nothing from him.
Failure to pick up one person's garbage isn't a huge issue, but the followup doesn't say much for how the city deals with the public. What's more troubling is when it is made obvious that they are going to get a butt kicking for doing a lousy job, and still no one does anything about it.
Taylor has decided to solve the problem herself by bulking up her garbage with recyclables. That's contrary to everything the city says it wants, louis vuitton bags, but the garbage will be picked up. Count another victory for government and its standardized procedures.
